Calculate the concentration of NaCl in a solution prepared by diluting 2 mL of 0.05 M NaCl to a total volume of 10 mL with deionized water. What is the total concentration of ions in the diluted solution

    Explanation:

    We can apply the formula for dilution, to determine the [NaCl]

    2 mL. 0.05M = 10 mL. M

    M = 2 mL. 0.05M / 10 mL → 0.01 M

    In order to determine the [ions] we dissociate our solute:

    NaCl → Na⁺ + Cl⁻

    Our solute concentration in diluted solution is 0.01M and the ratio with the ions is 1:1, so the total concentration of ions in the diluted solution is:

    [Na⁺] + [Cl⁻] = 0.01 + 0.01 = 0.02M

    For x moles of NaCl, it corresponds x moles of Na cation and x moles of Cl anion.
