The lab just ran out of 1 M HCl that you need to complete the Benzillic Acid lab. The TA tells you there is 12 M HCl in the fume hood. You need to make 10.0 mL of 1.0 M HCl. What volume or 12 M HCl will you need to dilute to get the correct volume and concentration of 1.0 M HCl?

    0.83 mL

    Explanation:

    Given data

    Initial concentration (C₁) : 12 M Initial volume (V₁) : ? Final concentration (C₂) : 1.0 M Final volume (V₂) : 10.0 mL

    We can calculate the initial volume of HCl using the dilution rule.

    C₁ * V₁ = C₂ * V₂

    V₁ = C₂ * V₂ / C₁

    V₁ = 1.0 M * 10.0 mL / 12 M

    V₁ = 0.83 mL

    The required volume of the initial solution is 0.83 mL.
