The distinction between the theory and the hypothesis. In the context of scientific reasoning, the assumption is created before any study has been finished for the sake of experimentation. The hypothesis, on the other side, is a concept laid out to describe events already backed by information.

A theory is a principle that explains any phenomena or situation already supported by data. A hypothesis is an assumption, or a statement that is waiting to be proved.
They can appear to be similar because in order to have a theory you would need a hypothesis. You would then build upon your hypothesis so it would be come a theory. Also, you would need data to prove a theory or a hypothesis.
