The reaction is exothermic; Sodium is a highly reactive metal with 1 valance electron, and chlorine is a reactive gas which has 7 valance electrons. Chlorine needs an extra electron to achieve its octet and become more stable. Likewise, sodium needs to lose an electron to have an octet. NaCl is an ionic compound known commonly as table salt or Halite in its rock form.
