    This phenomenon is called respiratory acidosis. Carbon dioxide is acidic in nature. So, when there is an overaccumulation of carbon dioxide in the blood, it becomes acidic. The pH lowers and the partial pressure of carbon dioxide increases. This occurs during periods of hypoventilation.
