Compare an electrically neutral atom of hydrogen and an isotope of hydrogen.

    Every atom is neutral. If it is charged it would be called an ion. Isotopes are atoms of the same element, but of different atomic weight because the number of neutrons in the core is different.

    Hydrogen atom = one proton + one electron, neutral

    Hydrogen isotope = one proton + 0 to 2 neutrons + 1 electron, also neutral.

    Hydrogen ion = one proton + 0 to 2 neutrons, no electron, positively charged.

    H ydrogen isotope has a charge. either has an extra electron or one less electron. the proton count always stays the same.
