What is the proper solution to the following equation? Answer with correct significant figures. (23.1 + 5.61 + 1.008) * 7.6134 * 8.431 =

    Answer: - Answer is 1910 and it has three significant figures.

    Solution: - As per the rule, first of all we solve for the bracket. In bracket we have three numbers and there is an addition for all of them. For addition and subtraction, we go with least decimal places.

    23.1 has one decimal place, 5.61 has two decimal places and 1.008 has three decimal places. First one is the least one, so after doing addition, the result is rounded to one decimal places only.

    (23.1 + 5.61 + 1.008) = 29.7

    Then there is a multiply for all the numbers and for multiply and division we go with least number of significant figures. What we have now is, 29.7*7.6134*8.431

    All these numbers are in multiply and they have 3, 5 and 4 significant figures respectively. We go with least significant figures so after multiplication the value has to be rounded off to three significant figures.

    29.7*7.6134*8.431 = 1906

    1906 has four significant figures and so it is round off to 1910 which has just three significant figures. So, the answer is 1910.
