When methane reacts with oxygen, the products are carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). How many grams of water are formed if 24g of methane react completely with 96g of oxygen to form 66g of carbon dioxide? (include units)

    To solve this problem we will simply follow the Law of conservation of mass.

    According to this law:

    " The mass of product in the chemical reaction must be equal to the mass of reactant"

    Given dа ta:

    mass of methane = 24 g

    mass of oxygen = 96 g

    mass of carbon dioxide = 66 g

    mass of water=?

    Solution:

    CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O

    24g + 96 g = 66 g + ?

    120 g = 66 g + ?

    120 g - 66 g = 54 g

    so 54 g of waters are produce.

    We can see that mass of water is equal to the sum of masses of reactant minus mass of product formed i. e mass of carbon dioxide.
