    Empirical formula is CH₂.

    Explanation:

    Given dа ta:

Empirical formula of sample = ?

    Mass of C = 5.97 g

    Mass of H = 0.99 g

    Solution:

    Number of gram atoms of H = 0.99 / 1.01 = 0.98

    Number of gram atoms of C = 5.97 / 12 = 0.5

    Atomic ratio:

    C : H

    0.5/0.5 : 0.98/0.5

    1 : 2

    C : H = 1 : 2

    Empirical formula is CH₂.
