    Spectator ions are those ions present in a reaction mixture but do not participate in the main reaction.

    The ionic equation usually shows only the reaction of ions that actually participate in the reaction leaving out the spectator ions.

    This means that the ionic equation tells us at a glance, the ionic species that actually reacted to form the product.
