What is meant by the term effective nuclear charge

    Effective Nuclear charge is represented by a Z * and sometimes Zeff. It's the net positive charge of an electron in a polyelectronic atom (valence electrons) the equation for it is Z*=Z-S

    Z is the atomic number and S is the Shielding electrons
