A 2.5 g sample of french fries is placed in a calorimeter with 500.0 g of water at an initial temperature of 21°C. After combustion of the french fries the water has a temperature of 48°C. What is the caloric value (kcal/g) of the french fries? The heat capacity, CH2O, of the water is 1.00 cal/g °C. Remember that the heat, q, absorbed be a given mass, m, of water to raise its temperature ❝T degrees is given by q = mCH2O❝T.

    Answer: 5.4 kcal/g

Explanation: heat content of French fries is released to heat the water through a temperature change of 48-21 = 27°c

    Heat content h = 500*1*27 = 13500 cal

    Calorific value of French fry = 13500/2.5 = 5400 cal/g

    = 5.4k cal/g
