    Explanation:

    According to the periodic table, both magnesium and sulfur belongs to third period.

    It is known that atomic number is the number of protons present in an atom.

    Also, it is known that when an atom is neutral then number of protons equal the number of electrons.

    So, atomic number of magnesium is 12, that is, electronic configuration of magnesium is 2, 8, 2. Whereas atomic number of sulfur is 16, that is, electronic configuration of sulfur is 2, 8, 6.

    Thus, we can conclude that in the outer shell magnesium has 2 electrons and sulfur has 6 electrons.
