    The left side of the equation is the reactant side and the right side is the product side. When two elements are reacting on the left side to produce a compound, that is a synthesis reaction. When a compound on the reactant side is broken down into different elements on the product side, that is a decomposition reaction.

    water = hydrogen + oxygen (decomposition)

    Iron + oxygen = iron oxide (synthesis)

    sodium + chlorine = sodium chloride (synthesis)

    sulfur + oxygen = sulfur dioxide (synthesis)

    potassium + chlorine = potassium chloride (synthesis)

    calcium carbonate = calcium oxide + carbon dioxide (decomposition)
