Mineral oil dissolves in hexane but not in ethanol

    Answer: - "Like dissolves like." It means, a polar compound is soluble in polar solvent and non polar compound is soluble in non polar solvent.

    Mineral oil is non polar in nature as it has longest carbon chain. Hexane is also non polar solvent. Being non polar, mineral oil is soluble in hexane.

    Ethanol is a polar solvent and so mineral oil is insoluble in it.
