Arsenic would be the primary element you would want as a rat poison. However, arsenic is not as common a component of rat poisons today; most manufacturers have substituted anticoagulants; metal phosphides of aluminum, calcium, magnesium, and zinc; and, vitamins D, D1, and D2 that are highly toxic to rats.
