Why is air a homogeneous mixture and not a compound?

    It cannot be a compound because the different elements that make up the air are not chemically bonded to each other. To be a compound they would have to be bonded, therefore air is just a mixture. E. g. there is oxygen, nitrogen and argon in air but these are not bonded to each other.
