The more heat you add to the water, the faster the particles move, and the more cool air you add, the slower the particles move.

    Solid:

particles are compact together and the water is currently a cold ice cube due to the cool temperature added.

    Liquid:

the water is currently water, and is in a state were the particles can move somewhat freely and can fit into the shape of any container due to the added heat to the ice cube.

    Gas:

due to adding a lot of heat or in other words, boiling the water, the water is now in a state where the particles move very freely.
