Each phase of matter can be described according to the relative amount of intermolecular forces (IF) holding the molecules together compared to the kinetic energy (KE) of those molecules.     solid: IF much greater than the KE of the substance

    liquid: IF present however, KE is slightly greater than the IF

    gas: negligible IF with high degree if KE
