The acid test or HCl test is used to identify and differentiate between basic minerals, Halite (NaCl salt) and other Carbonates all of which tend to form similar looking compounds. This is done by dissolving them in water or HCl, Halite will dissolve in water while the Carbonates will dissolve in HCl
