Matter is defined as any substance that has some mass and occupies volume.

Anything that we can observe is also matter.

For example, a solid wooden box of mass 15 kg is a matter.

When elements of pure substance that we cannot separate by physical methods until we break its chemical chain is known as a substance.

A substance can be present in solid, liquid, gaseous or plasma state.

For example, diamond, gold, water, salt etc are all pure substances.

A mixture is defined as the substance in which two or more substances are physically mixed together.

A mixture can be homogeneous if it contains uniform composition of solute particles into the solvent.

For example, salt dissolved in water is a homogeneous mixture.

A mixture that contains non-uniform composition of solute particles into the solvent is known as a heterogeneous mixture.

For example, sand in water is a heterogeneous mixture.
