An ionic bond forms when one atom gives up one or more electrons to another atom. In this type of bonding, there is complete transfer of electrons from one atom to another. Anions are the atoms that gained electron/s while cations are those that lost electrons. This bonding typically occurs between a metal and a nonmetal, wherein, the metal transfers electron/s to the nonmetal to achieve a full valence shell for both atoms.
