A metal having a mass of 44 grams is dropped in 118.2 cm3

of water and sinks to the bottom. The volume

of the water and object is 124.3 cm3

. What is the density of the metal?

    The volume of the lump that was dropped into the water is

    (124.3 - 118.2) = 6.1 cm³

    The density of the lump is (mass) / (volume) = 44 / 6.1 = 7.21 gm per cm³.
