Why sodium chloride is hard but sodium metal is soft?

    NaCl is an ionic solid. Hence has strong ionic bonds. Whereas Na is a metallic solid and has only weaker metallic bonds.

    Sodium metal is soft due to weak metallic bonding in sodium as it has only one valance electron. Sodium chloride crystal is hard due to strong ionic bonding between sodium and chloride ions.
