Ethane and acetylene are two gaseous hydrocarbons. Chemical analyses show that in one sample of ethane, 2.65 g of carbon are combined with 0.665 g of hydrogen, and in one sample of acetylene, 4.56 g of carbon are combined with 0.383 g of hydrogen. (a) Are these results consistent with the law of multiple proportions? (b) Write reasonable molecular formulas for these compounds.

    in ethane : -

    2.65 g of carbon reacts with 0.665 g of hydrogen

    1 g of carbon reacts with. 665/2.65 = 0.2509 g of hydrogen

    now in the acetylene

    4.56 g of carbon reacts with 0.383 g of hydrogen

    1 g of carbon reacts with 0.383/4.56 = 0.08399 g of hydrogen.

    ratio of hydrogen reacting with 1 g of carbon is aas follows

    ratio of hydrogen = 0.2509 / 0.08399 = 2.98 or 3/1 approx which is a ratio of small whole nos.

    b). CH₃ - Ethane

    CH - Acetylene.
