A sample of an ore of iron, hematite, is 79% Fe2O3. How much iron is there in 4 kilograms of the ore? Answer in units of g.

    If the iron ore is 79% Fe2O3, then from a 1000 g sample of the ore you will have 790 g of Fe2O3.

    moles of Fe = 790 g Fe2O3[ (1 mole) / (159.69 g/mol) ] (2 moles Fe) / (1 mole Fe2O3) = 4.57 moles Fe

    mass Fe = 4.57 moles Fe (55.845 g) / (1 mol) = 255 g Fe.
