    Pure water at standard conditions has equal number of H + and OH - ions which makes it a neutral substance with pH 7. We can solve this problem as follows:

    pH = - log [H+]

    7 = - log [H+]

    [H+] = 10^-7 = [OH-]

    K = [H+][OH-] = 10^-7 (10^-7) = 10^-14
