What is thermodynamics? Why is this subject of importance to chemists? Explain why there is a natural direction of change for all spontaneous processes. Why, for example, does a shattered glass window not suddenly repair itself like in a movierunning backward?

    See explanation below.

    Explanation:

Thermodynamics is the study of the laws that govern the relationship between the heat, the work, and other forms of energy, and the causes and effects of the pressure, temperature, and other thermodynamics greatness.

This subject is important because by it we can identify how states change happens, predict the state of a change, identify the gain or loss of energy, etc.

By the second law of thermodynamics, the systems intend to a maximum value of randomness, which is measured by the entropy (S), thus, the spontaneous reaction occurs in the direction of the higher randomness. A shattered glass window has its molecules more agitated and distant from each other, thus it randomness is higher than a non-shattered one. Thus, if it was movierunning backward, it would take the direction of less randomness.
