If elemental bromine is being formed according to the equation below at a rate of 0.056 m s - 1, at what rate is bromide ion being consumed?

    The equation is:

    5 Br⁻ (aq) + BrO₃⁻ (aq) + 6 H⁺ (aq) - - > 3 Br² (aq) + 3 H₂ O (l)

    and the answer is:

    Elemental bromine formation rate = 0.056 m s⁻¹

    Consumption of 5 bromide ion and one BrO₃⁻ will give 3 elemental bromide

    So rate of disappearance of Bromide ion = 0.056 x 5 / 3 = 0.093 M S-1
