The answer is: by arguing that Earth's rotation makes objects appear to move in the sky

At that time, Copernicus propose a model that stated earth is not the center of universe, but the sun is. This model was seen as really controversial and gained very little public support, especially since it directly oppose the view of the church.

The opposition argued that Copernicus' model can't be right because if the earth is not the center, the planetary objects in the sky would not move and replace one another. Galileo's argument regarding rotation address this very opposing view.
