    An ionic compound is formed due to transfer of one or more electrons from a metal atom to a non metal atom.

    During the formation of the compound, a metal atom loses electrons and forms a positively charged ion known as cation. The electrons lost by the metal atom are accepted by the non metal atom. The non metal forms a negatively charged ion known as anion.

    These oppositely charged ions are attracted to each others due to the electrostatic forces of attractions. As a result, an ionic bond is formed.

    Based on the above discussion, the correct order of events is given below.

    B - Atoms donate and receive electrons.

    D - Anions and cations are formed.

    A - Oppositely charged ions attract.

    C - Charges of ions balance one another.
