A compound is found to contain only 24.5 g nitrogen and 70.0 g oxygen. what is the compounds empirical formula.

    To solve the emprical formula, convert the mass to moles.

    moles N = 24.5 g (1 mole / 14 g) = 1.75

    moles O = 70 g (1 mole / 16 g) = 4.325

    then divide the number of moles by the lowest to get the coefficient of each element

    N = 1.75 / 1.75 = 1

    O = 4.325 / 1.75 = 2.5

    so the empirical formula NO5/2

    or N2O5
