The nonpolar solvents dissolve the nonpolar substances.
Explanation:
The substance are dissolved in solvent, and make a solution. In solution the solvent is present in the greater amount and solute is present in the less quantity. The solvent dissolve the solute. The dissolution of solute in to solvent always follow the " like dissolve like " rule of chemistry.
If solvent is made up of polar substance then it dissolve the polar solute. If it is non polar then it can dissolve the non polar substances.
The non polar substances are dissolve in non polar solvent. For example wax is dissolve into the gasoline because both are non polar in nature. The electronegativity difference between the atoms are same. So, there is absence of charges which make them non polar. Others non polar solvents include benzene, hexane, toluene, chloroform etc.
The polar solvent can not dissolve the non polar substances like when oil is mix into the water, both will create two layers and can not mix together even after shaking.
The most widely used polar solvent is water. Water is called universal solvent because of high polarity all polar substance are dissolve in it. Water create electrostatic interaction with other polar molecules. The negative end of water attract the positive end of polar molecules and positive end of water attract negative end of polar substance and in this way polar substance get dissolve in it.
