Alkanes are saturated organic molecules that contain only carbon and hydrogen atoms connected through single bonds. in the iupac naming system, all alkanes end in the suffix ane and begin with a prefix determined by the number of carbon atoms in the molecule:

    Here is the table of prefixes. Alkanes have the general chemical formula CnH2n+2. CH4 where n = 1 is called METhane and this means it has just one carbon atom. The more atoms you add the chemical formula changes. If you have 2 carbon atoms the formula will be C2H2x2+2 id est C2H6 (Ethane).
