    1 Mg, 2I, 2Br on the left n

    1 Mg, 2I, 2Br on the right

    they are equal so the eqn is balanced

    Both Br and I are part of the Halogen group. They have similar chemical properties. In this case, the chemical equation represents a displacement reaction in which the I in MgI2 is displaced by Br to form MgBr2:
