When a stretched string is vibrated up and down with a particular frequency, it causes a standing wave to be produced. An experiment is performed in which several different frequencies are used to produce corresponding standing waves with specific wavelengths. The frequency is the variable and the wavelength is the variable. The independent variable is usually placed on the axis and the dependent variable is placed on the axis.
