With current technologies, not much. In the past it was a much more efficient way to store data and programs, but I'm afraid they've become obsolete.

I would say that the main advantage of CD-ROMs is that they can hold entire programs (much more information than DVDs can store), and moreover, the information cannot be modified (it is protected), as the name - ROM means ''read-only memory'' ⇔it can't be written.
