Neutrons are not detected by standard gas-filled, scintillation or solid-state detectors. Why is this? What means are used to detect neutrons?

    Answer and Explanation:

    Neutron, as clear from the name itself are electrically neutral and unlike Gamma rays, they can not be detected by the use of direct interaction and hence are undetectable by scintillation, standard gas filled detectors, etc.

    The neutrons present in matter are detected by the use of mechanism of indirect interactions.

    One of the method to detect neutrons is by the use of Neutron detectors which detects the number of neutrons and not their energy content by detecting the neutrons due to the inclusion of high cross section neutron nuclide.
