A new development has been proposed on a major highway and we are asked to evaluate traffic and pedestrian safety. The highway has many driveways and intersections. The stretch of highway is 5 miles long with four lanes carrying an average daily traffic (ADT) of 10,000 vehicles per day. There were 43 accidents for the past three years on this section of the roadway.

Determine the followings

    A. Rse = 0.785 accident per million

    B. - do not tail gate.

    - be courteous to other drivers

    - perform engine maintenance and break maintenance

    Explanation:

    Rse = (A * 1000000) / (ADT * 365 * MI * T)

    Where Rse = accident rate per million vehicle

    ADT = average daily traffic = 10000

    MI = length of section in miles = 5

    A = recorded accident = 43

    So therefore:

    Rse = (43 * 1000000) / (10000 * 365 * 5 * 3)

    Rse = 0.785 accident per million

    B. - leave about three to five seconds cushion between you and the car in front of you and start journeys early enough to avoid over speeding.

    - treat every other driver with respect because no person owns the road and observe traffic rules.

    - performing of engine and break maintenance when due to avoid unnecessary breakdown of vehicle while on the road due to engine and break failure so as not to cause accident.
