    Joby realized that in spite of his fears he must be the drummer boy. At the end of the story, "Joby swallowed, wiped his eyes and cleared his throat, he settled himself.

I personally think Joby became the drummer boy because he wanted to be in the war like all of his peers. Also, the Joby character is thought to be based on John Clem, a drummerboy in the time of the Civil War
