How does the setting most affect the following passage?

Beth slowly tiptoed around the sleeping

Rottweiler. It was nearly pitch black in the smoky room, and Beth felt

like she was just one cough or trip away from being torn to shreds.

    Basically, the setting is describing the area in which she is in, which seems to be very terrifying, thus meaning the setting is scary
