    (Homer, 6-7) "They scrambled to their places by the rowlocks / and all in line dipped oars in the gray sea." the first example is the passage cited in proper MLA format. When quoting a text in MLA, one should place parenthesis around the author's last name and the line/page number from which the quote is taken. The name and number (s) should also be separated by a comma.
