Why did scholars have problems recognizing the traditions of native American literature

Native Americans and the Settlers (1490s - and on C. E.) Dozens of unique American Indian tribes were scattered across North and Central America when the first colonists landed. The Aztec empire was by far the largest, with millions of natives within its borders.
