Amphibians are born in the water. Their eggs need to be in the water to keep from drying out. Most amphibians breathe with gills when they are young. Then they undergo a metamorphosis and develop lungs. Amphibians absorb air and water through their skin. They need moisture in order to survive. In dry weather, amphibians will burrow underground to find moist soil.
