Penelope is often shown as an archetype of female fidelity, particularly when the husband or man has gone to war. She shows her cunning and wiles by delaying the marriage to the suitors through various ways, including the weaving and unweaving of her father's death shroud, and the contest of the bow and axes. She is shrewd, as if she is to be married, as she seems to be forced to, she tries to go for the highest price possible, by showing herself to the suitors to inflame their passions and competition for her. The way in which she tests Odysseus while as the beggar, and later when she tests his identity show her intelligence.
