The woods were fairly still, except for the unnerving hoot of an owl. No matter how far Darren walked, the owl seemed always just behind him, stalking him, even though there was no sound of flight or rustling branches. Had it been clear that night, he may have had enough light to see into the treetops.

What mood does this setting convey to readers?

A. Lonely

B. Violent

C. Depressing

D. Eerie
