How do katniss and rue communicate when they are apart in the arena

They whistle a melody from Katniss' childhood from time to time so that the mockingjays sitting on the trees will carry the call through the whole forest (this fictional species imitates sounds from their surroundings). If one of them hears the melody they know the other one is doing fine.
