The three witches created tension in Macbeth by consuming his well-being in three attributes: bravery, ambition, and self-doubt. These three attributes were used as tools by the witches to convince him with their prophecies - one of which is, he will be king - and live with it as a cause of self-destruction to Macbeth being ambitious and guilty of crime. He struggled finding his strength of character defeating his consuming ambition, self-doubt, and misuse of his physical courage. The witches were capable of causing turmoil by simply playing with these three attributes against Macbeth.
