In "Things Fall Apart", Chinua Achebe shows the white men's attempts of transforming the Igbo society. Through the portrayal of Mr. Brown and Mr. Smith, Achebe shows the two classes of the white men.

Mr. Brown was the first missionary to arrive at Umuofia. And he didn't try to force the Igbo people to convert into Christianity. Instead, he works with them, respecting the traditions and customs of the people he is with. He learned their ways to better understand them. Contrary to his own religious and duty of converting the people into another religion, he respects their own religion. He did not coerce them into anything they did not want to do.

On the other hand, Mr. Smith is just the opposite of his predecessor. He plans to use force in his objective of converting the people. He even used devious plans to pit them against each other. He had no respect for their traditions nor for their religious practices like Mr. Brown did. His only objective is to get his duty done, whether by hook or crook, and in his case, more of the crooked way.
