According to Hess's theory, what might happen if the magma under a mid-ocean ridge cools?

•The magnetic stripes might reverse direction.

•The deep-ocean trench might become deeper.

•The crust at the ridge might form more quickly.

The plates on either side of the ridge might stop moving

    Explanation:

Rear Admiral Harry Hammond Hess proposed a theory that was named after him, he stated that oceans rises from their centres, with molten material (basalt) moving up from the Earth's mantle along the mid ocean ridges. The purpose of this theory is to give explanation to how the continents could actually drift, and the planet on either side of the rigde might stop moving.

Most noble for his theories on sea floor spreading, especially the correlation between island arcs, seafloor gravity anomalies, and serpentinized peridotite, proposing that the convection of the Earth's mantle was the driving force behind this process.

    The correct answer is D)

The plates on either side fo the ridge might stop moving.

    Explanation:

Harold Hammond Hess a US Navy Officer and geologists proposed a theory that the earth beneath the sea was constantly moving and that this was responsible for drifting apart of the continents.

He suggested that during the movement which is caused by the downward action of gravity on the tectonic plates, on either side of ridges found in the middle of the ocean, molten magma (which is simply rock superheated by the core of the earth until it becomes liquid) finds its way through cracks.

The termination of movement on either side is held as a probable event because, though molten magma contributes to the tectonic shifts, they are not solely responsible.

    Cheers!
